Build It With Crumbs
Disruptive mobility calls for a disruptive financial approach. Our new paradigm, Build It with Crumbs, could work for any U.S. city. You do have to accept that, at least at the start, your city’s LEAN infrastructure might not win a beauty contest. There may be more orange and white barriers than you’d like to see. But we hope you will see past the barriers to the true beauty of a low speed, clean air mobility alternative, a network that is free for everyone, like sidewalks.
Build It with Crumbs means that you can build LEAN infrastructure with the crumbs of major transportation projects. Our approach is barely a rounding error, or a contingency budget, for large projects. This is not a question of whether your city afford LEAN mobility. Your city can’t afford NOT to do this.

Build It with Crumbs is explained more fully in executive director Susan Engelking’s book, Tiny Transit: Cut Carbon Emissions in Your City Before It’s Too Late. For a free downloadable pdf, please contact us.
We can help you make the economic case for your city. Find out how in Susan Engelking’s forthcoming book, Resilience: The New Livability Playbook for Mayors. Please contact us to preorder a free copy.
Grant opportunities
Right now, we’re scouting for federal and state infrastructure, economic development, and economic stimulus money that can support cities as they:
- Incorporate LEAN infrastructure into their transportation plans.
- Launch pubic information and education on LEAN mobility.
- Provide resources to metropolitan planning and other regional organizations to support micromobility trails and linkages between cities in proximity.
- Fund pilot and demonstration projects of LEAN mobility in cities across the U.S.
Stay tuned. We’re developing a list of resources that can help cities.
If you are aware of agencies, foundations or other grant opportunities for cities and communities, please contact us. We can help get the word out or identify innovative projects that could qualify.
